Exactly a year ago, we embarked on a heartfelt journey by launching our recognized charity, a tribute to our beloved son Oliver, who was tragically lost at the Jelly Beans Nursery in Ashford in September 2021. This devastating event not only shattered our lives but also ignited a profound commitment within us to advocate for the safety and well-being of children in childcare settings. We realized that turning our grief into action could help prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future, not just for our family but for countless others.
Today, on this poignant anniversary, we are proud to announce that we have just delivered our 1000th LifeVac device to a childcare setting in Leeds. This milestone is not just a number; it represents our unwavering dedication and the collective efforts of many individuals who have rallied behind our cause. We are immensely thankful to everyone who has supported our small charity, as their contributions have enabled us to make significant strides in the childcare industry. Our advocacy focuses on promoting stricter standards regarding staff-to-child ratios, food safety, and first aid training. These are not just regulatory measures; they are essential components that can save lives and ensure that children are cared for in safe environments. With changes now being implemented to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) from September this year, driven by the tragic circumstances surrounding Oliver’s loss, we are incredibly proud of the legacy he leaves behind. This legacy is a testament to our commitment to effecting change, even amidst the ongoing sorrow that remains embedded in our hearts.
We extend our heartfelt thanks from Lewis and Zoe to everyone who has helped us throughout this year. Our gratitude goes out to our dedicated trustees, our small team of incredible volunteers, and the public who have attended the various events we participated in across 2024.
These events have not only raised awareness but have also fostered a sense of community and solidarity. Many have played our games, thrown sponges at Lewis in good humor, and contributed to our fundraising targets with generosity and enthusiasm. Each act of support has reinforced our belief that together, we can create a safer environment for children everywhere. As we reflect on the past year, we are filled with hope and determination to continue this important work, ensuring that Oliver's memory lives on through our efforts to protect and advocate for the youngest members of our society.
